The National Identification Authority (NIA), in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has announced the commencement of the nationwide Ghana Card registration exercise for Ghanaian children aged between 6 and 14 years in the Northern Region.
The exercise begins on Thursday, June 11, 2026, following the successful completion of registration activities in the Volta and Oti Regions. A mop-up exercise is currently underway in those regions to capture eligible children who were unable to register during the main exercise.
In a statement signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NIA, on June 10, 2026, registration teams will visit both public and private schools across the Northern Region to ensure broad coverage.
The exercise will be conducted daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children within the target age group who are not enrolled in school can register at any designated registration centre or participating school within their communities.
Parents and guardians are required to present the child’s original Birth Certificate, valid Ghanaian Passport, or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship. In cases where these documents are unavailable, a parent, relative, or legal guardian may complete an Oath of Identity form. For children without known relatives, two Social Welfare Officers may vouch for the child under oath.
The NIA further encouraged parents and guardians to provide the child’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card or NHIS number where available. Individuals presenting children for registration must be Ghanaian citizens, at least 18 years old, of sound mind, and possess a valid Ghana Card.
The Authority is calling on parents, guardians, school authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders in the Northern Region to support and actively participate in the exercise.
The NIA also cautioned that providing false information or facilitating the registration of a non-Ghanaian is an offence punishable by law.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and reliable national identity system that ensures every eligible Ghanaian is recognised, protected, and counted.
