The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, is urging journalists to place greater emphasis on research and data-driven analysis in their reporting to promote accuracy and informed public discourse.
The call was made when the university presented a comprehensive research report covering key sectors such as mining, agriculture, energy, safety, water, and sanitation.
The report, which covers the period between 2020 and 2024, also provides practical solutions to some of the country’s pressing challenges, including illegal mining and poor waste management.
Speaking during the presentation of the document to the management of Citi FM and Channel One TV, the Head of Business Development and Assistant Registrar at UMaT, Michael Bremfi, said the report is intended to serve as a credible reference point for journalists and policymakers.
“Over the years, the university has undertaken very impactful research activities. As ardent listeners of Citi, we often hear the emphasis on solutions from academia to address some of society’s challenges.
“So when we compiled this report, we found it important to make it accessible to you, so you can use research-based information to guide your discussions on air and on television,” he said.
Receiving the document on behalf of management, the Head of News at Citi FM and Channel One TV, Nana Tuffour Boateng, described the initiative as timely and significant.
He assured the university that the report would be reviewed thoroughly and its findings applied where relevant in news production and programming.
“We are grateful for this gesture, and I want to assure you that the content will be carefully reviewed and applied. On behalf of management, including our CEO, General Manager, and the entire editorial team, we say thank you,” he stated.
