The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa that the government is committed to supporting their successful reintegration into society, including actively facilitating employment opportunities for those ready to work.

Ablakwa gave the assurance on Saturday, June 6, when he welcomed a second batch of 345 Ghanaians who arrived at the Accra International Airport following their evacuation from South Africa amid growing concerns over xenophobic attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals.

The returnees were received by government officials led by the Foreign Affairs Minister as part of an ongoing repatriation exercise aimed at bringing affected Ghanaians home safely and helping them rebuild their lives.

Addressing the evacuees shortly after their arrival, Ablakwa stressed that the government’s responsibility does not end with transporting citizens back to Ghana but extends to ensuring that they are adequately supported as they transition into life back home.

He explained that the government is focused on the long-term welfare of the returnees and is determined to create opportunities that will enable them to become economically productive and self-sufficient.

“We are concerned about your full integration. So, apart from all the parcels you will receive today, the dinner, the drinks, the refreshments, the transportation allowance and the resettlement allowance, we are going to make sure that those of you who are willing, able, and ready to work, we will actively facilitate employment opportunities for you.”

The Foreign Affairs Minister further reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens both at home and abroad, noting that the evacuation exercise demonstrates the state’s resolve to stand by its people in times of difficulty.
