World Cup: Ghana qualify despite 2-1 defeat to Croatia

The Black Stars booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Ghana entered the game with qualification already assured after results elsewhere confirmed that four points from their opening two matches would be enough to secure progression to the Round of 32 under FIFA’s expanded tournament format.

Croatia, however, needed a positive result to keep their own qualification hopes alive and made the brighter start.

The Europeans broke the deadlock in the first half when Petar Sučić found the back of the net, with Mateo Kovačić providing the assist to hand Croatia a deserved 1-0 lead at the break.

Ghana struggled to create clear-cut chances during the opening 45 minutes but emerged with greater urgency after the restart.

Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen equalised after connecting with a cross from Ernest Nuamah, briefly restoring hope for the Black Stars.

The joy was short-lived, however, as Croatia regained the lead 10 minutes later. Veteran captain Luka Modrić delivered a pinpoint assist for Nikola Vlašić, who restored Croatia’s advantage with a decisive finish in the 83rd minute.

Despite late pressure from Ghana, Croatia held firm to secure all three points and finish the group stage with a crucial victory.

Although the defeat ended Ghana’s unbeaten start to the tournament, the Black Stars’ earlier victories over Panama and draw against England ensured they accumulated enough points to progress to the Round of 32.

Carlos Queiroz’s side will now shift focus to the knockout phase as they seek to extend Ghana’s campaign and challenge for a place in the last 16.

The Round of 32 draw and Ghana’s next opponents will be confirmed once the remaining group-stage fixtures are completed.
