A lifeless body has been found inside a commercial minibus, popularly known as a trotro, at Alajo following the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra after Monday’s heavy rainfall.
The vehicle was discovered in a gutter on Wednesday after floodwaters receded in the area. Residents who inspected the stranded minibus reportedly found the lifeless body inside.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and authorities are yet to officially identify the victim or determine how he became trapped in the vehicle.
The discovery adds to the growing human toll from Monday’s floods, which submerged homes, roads and businesses across several communities in the Greater Accra Region.
On Tuesday June 30, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak told Parliament that at least 12 people had lost their lives as a result of the flooding, while seven others were reported missing as of Tuesday morning.
According to the Minister, the floods displaced 7,761 households and affected more than 38,000 people nationwide after hours of torrential rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and inundated several communities.
Emergency responders and disaster management officials continue to assess the extent of the destruction while carrying out search, rescue and recovery operations in affected areas.
The latest incident at Alajo highlights the tragic consequences of the floods, as authorities continue efforts to account for missing persons and support affected families.
