The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that the government will review the disciplinary framework in Senior High Schools (SHSs) to strengthen the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) ability to address student misconduct.
According to the Minister, growing cases of indiscipline in schools, including assaults on teachers, the destruction of school security cameras, and the sale of marijuana on school premises, have become a major concern.
Responding to questions on the floor of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu said the government is determined to curb such behaviour and restore discipline in educational institutions.
He noted that the abolition of corporal punishment has contributed to challenges in enforcing discipline, with some students escaping sanctions for unacceptable conduct.
“We reviewed our corporal punishment regime, and therefore, there is laxity, and many of these students are not punished for that unacceptable conduct. We may have to rethink and review our punishment regime and give the Ghana Education Service authority to deal ruthlessly with any student who misbehaves and finds himself wanting when it comes to the code of conduct of the school,” he said.
The Education Minister added that while discussions on reviewing the disciplinary regime continue, the Ministry of Education and the GES are already implementing measures aimed at strengthening discipline across pre-tertiary educational institutions.
