President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform the Ho Sports Stadium into a modern multi-purpose sports complex as part of efforts to improve Ghana’s sports infrastructure.
The President said immediate steps would be taken to begin the design process for the redevelopment of the facility, which he believes has the potential to become a major sporting and entertainment hub due to its strategic location and available land.
Speaking during an inspection of the stadium on Friday, July 17, President Mahama said the redevelopment would be completed around the time Ghana marks the stadium’s 70th anniversary, creating a modern facility capable of hosting major sporting events.
“As we know, Ghana celebrates its 70th Anniversary next year and so we want that by the time this stadium is also 70 years we would have reconstructed it into a very modern facility. It has a very strategic central location in the municipality which is an advantage.
“It has sufficient land around it to build a very modern stadium here so we will allocate the funds. We will do the designs, public interactions on the designs will be done and after that we will cut the sword for work to commence,” he said.
He explained that the redevelopment would move beyond football by incorporating commercial and entertainment facilities to ensure the stadium remains useful even when matches are not being played.
President Mahama said the project would include shops, restaurants, entertainment spaces and other facilities as part of efforts to align the facility with the government’s 24-Hour Economy vision.
“The problem we have with most stadia is when we are not playing soccer, we are not doing anything with the stadium. This one will have shops, entertainment, restaurants and different facilities so that if we are not playing soccer, in the spirit of the 24-Hour Economy, people will still come and use the stadium,” he said.
The President further disclosed that the government’s broader objective is to develop at least five stadiums across the country within the next four years to meet standards required to host Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.
