The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has deployed 600 tricycles to support the evacuation of waste collected during the National General Cleaning exercise across affected communities.
The additional logistics form part of efforts to speed up the removal of debris and refuse gathered from drains and public spaces following the two-day clean-up exercise.
Speaking on the second day of the exercise, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, said the increased deployment was necessary due to the volume of waste generated from the clean-up activities.
He explained that while 400 tricycles were used on the first day of the exercise, the number had been increased to 600 to improve the pace of waste evacuation.
“Yesterday we used 400 tricycles. Today we are using 600. We are bringing 40 or 60 additional quarter trucks, and we are doing it,” he said.
The Minister added that the increased support would enable authorities to complete the evacuation of waste within the shortest possible time before moving on to sustained sweeping and sanitation activities.
He expressed confidence that with the additional equipment, the evacuation process could be completed within a week, allowing sanitation teams to focus on maintaining clean communities.
“Within the next possible week, we will be able to finish the evacuation and continue with the sweeping,” he stated.
The National General Cleaning exercise is part of government’s post-flood response measures aimed at clearing blocked drains, improving sanitation and reducing the risk of future flooding in affected regions.
