The Ghana Police Service has deployed thousands of officers across the country to participate in the two-day National General Cleaning Exercise, which begins today, Friday, July 10.
In a statement, the Police Administration said it has mobilised personnel and equipment to support the nationwide exercise, which forms part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding.
According to the Service, the resources mobilised include brooms, wheelbarrows, tricycles and other sanitation equipment to facilitate clean-up activities in communities across the country.
The Police Service urged the public to join officers in the exercise and contribute to keeping communities clean and safe.
“Join our officers in various communities across the country; let us keep Ghana safe and clean,” the statement said.
The National General Cleaning Exercise was announced in response to the devastating floods that struck parts of the country on June 29, with the Greater Accra Region among the hardest hit.
The floods claimed at least 13 lives, displaced thousands of residents, destroyed homes and businesses, damaged public infrastructure, and once again exposed longstanding challenges relating to poor drainage, indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental sanitation.
As part of the government’s response, President John Dramani Mahama directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and lead clean-up activities in their respective communities.
The two-day exercise forms part of measures introduced by the government’s Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to improve sanitation, desilt drains and minimise the risk of future flooding.
