Zoomlion Ghana Limited has stated that it has sufficient capacity to clear all waste generated in flood-affected communities following the nationwide cleanup exercise, dismissing concerns that large volumes of refuse could overwhelm its waste management facilities.
The assurance comes after the two-day National Cleanup Exercise held on July 10 and 11 in flood-hit areas across the country, during which thousands of tonnes of waste were removed from drains, streets and public spaces.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Operations Manager of the Teshie Waste Transfer Station, Naa Ayorkor Koney, said the facility was designed to handle waste volumes from multiple local authorities and had already demonstrated its capacity during the cleanup operation.
“The evidence is on the ground. When you come in here today, you wouldn’t even see a trace of the waste that we have received from Thursday when we started operations to support the cleanup exercise,” she said.
Madam Koney said the transfer station serves four Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)—Ledzokuku, Krowor, La Dade-Kotopon and Tema West—and has no limitations on the amount of waste it can process.
“We can take as much waste as comes in daily from these four areas,” she said.
According to her, the station consolidates waste collected from the four assemblies before transporting it to treatment facilities and final disposal sites, enabling uninterrupted collection even during periods of increased waste generation.
“The nature of our operations ensures that we have the capacity to serve all these areas. We consolidate the waste that comes in from the four areas, and then we are constantly transporting it to the final disposal sites and the treatment plants,” she said.
Madam Koney noted that the reopening of the Teshie Waste Transfer Station has significantly improved waste evacuation by allowing collection vehicles to offload closer to communities instead of travelling long distances to landfill sites.
She said the improved turnaround time enabled waste collection teams to make multiple trips during the national cleanup exercise, accelerating the removal of refuse from flood-prone communities.
Zoomlion Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong has added that the company will continue operations until all waste collected during the nationwide cleanup exercise has been evacuated from the affected areas.
