Zoomlion: Waste transfer stations key to efficient waste management

Operations Manager of the Teshie Zoomlion Transfer Station, Naa Ayorkor Koney, has stated that waste transfer stations have become a critical component of Accra’s waste management system, significantly improving the efficiency of waste collection and helping to keep Accra cleaner.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, July 13, Naa Ayorkor highlighted the important role transfer stations play within the broader waste management value chain, explaining that they have greatly reduced the time waste collection companies spend transporting refuse to final disposal sites.

She noted that the introduction of strategically located transfer stations has transformed waste collection operations by allowing refuse trucks to offload waste much closer to the communities they serve instead of making long trips to landfill sites on the outskirts of Accra.

Naa Ayorkor explained that waste management involves several interconnected stages, each of which plays a vital role in ensuring refuse generated in homes, markets and commercial areas is properly handled from collection through to final disposal.

She stressed that transfer stations serve as an essential link between waste collection and final disposal, making it possible for collection vehicles to return quickly to their routes after offloading waste, rather than spending several hours travelling to distant landfill facilities.

“When it comes to waste management, there are different layers to the operation. We start from the generation point where the collection is done and then it comes to haulage, it goes to treatment and then the final disposal. The waste transfer station is very critical in this value chain because it helps improve the waste turnaround time of the waste collection companies that go to the households to do collection.

In the past, we have them drive all the way from the city centres to the outskirts of Accra but with the introduction of these transfer stations, it reduces the number of hours the waste collectors use to dispose off the waste.”
