Parents of students at Yapalsi Primary School in Bimbilla are voicing their frustration over the daily need to wash their children’s uniforms.

This is because students are forced to sit on the floor during lessons due to a lack of furniture and the damaged school building.
Earlier this year, a rainstorm ripped off the roof of the upper primary classrooms, and no repairs have been made since. Channel One News visited the school and discovered that teachers have relocated the vulnerable kindergarten pupils to the dilapidated classrooms, while the upper primary students now use the kindergarten block.

Furniture is also in short supply, forcing many of the children to sit on the bare floor. When Channel One arrived at the school, students were seen scooping water out of the classrooms after a recent downpour. Despite their efforts, the floors remained wet, yet the children were still expected to sit and learn under these conditions.
Parents who spoke with Channel One expressed their growing frustration, explaining that they are considering withdrawing their children from school due to the need to wash their uniforms almost every day.
They also lamented that their repeated complaints to the local assembly have gone unanswered.
Rehinatu Abukari, a parent, said, “The school is for this area and that is where our children attend school. The roof got ripped off almost a year ago and nothing is done. When the children come to school, they’re made to sit under trees and in the classrooms on the floor. This demand that we always wash the uniforms and the current economic hardship is unbearable.”
Alhassan Abdulai, another parent, noted, “The school has a lot of challenges and the Parents Association is what usually comes to assist, but this current situation is over a year now and we are not hearing anything. The classrooms are flooded because it rained yesterday.”
The headteacher of the school, Asumah Ibrahim, echoed these concerns, detailing the various efforts made to get assistance, all of which have so far yielded no results.
Bimbilla Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Yaqoub, acknowledged the poor state of the school but explained that the assembly is currently overwhelmed with numerous challenges and limited resources.
