Bawku: Escalating conflict forces workers of NEDCo, GWCL to vacate post

Officials from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company of Ghana (NEDCo) have halted operations in Bawku due to the volatile security situation in the area.

Citi News’ investigations reveal that these officials have not reported to work since the conflict re-emerged, leaving critical water and electricity issues unresolved until they can safely return.

Although heavy gunfire has ceased, sporadic gunshots are still reported at night, keeping tensions high.

In response, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has called for calm and urged the public to avoid blame, emphasizing that the government is working on solutions to restore stability.

On October 30, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo ordered the immediate closure of courts in the Upper East Region due to the escalating conflict in Bawku.

The decision, based on security concerns raised by court staff and judges, will remain in effect until further notice.

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has also temporarily closed its Bawku branch, adding to the growing list of institutions suspending operations as the conflict continues.
