Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has questioned the capability of Black Stars coach Otto Addo to lead Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana currently tops Group I of the qualifiers with a three-point lead ahead of the final two matches, putting the team in a strong position to secure a spot at the global tournament.
Despite the results, concerns have been raised about the team’s performance, with critics faulting Addo for Ghana’s inconsistent displays.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said he was not convinced by Addo’s ability to guide the Black Stars at the World Cup.
He noted that Mali, though a strong side, started the qualification poorly, making it difficult for them to catch up, while Madagascar, with 16 points, have slim chances of overtaking Ghana.
In an interview with Wontumi TV, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated, “I’m sure Ghana is going to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but Otto Addo is not a coach who can lead us to the tournament.
“I see Mali as the strongest opponent in our group; unfortunately, they did not start the qualification series well. It is too late for them to secure a qualification. For Madagascar, who are trailing us with 16 points, they can’t win the two remaining games.”
Ghana’s recent victory over Mali brought them within one win of sealing qualification. The Black Stars will next face the Central African Republic away before hosting Comoros in their final qualifier in October 2025.
