An Accra-based law firm, A-List Attorneys Ghana PRUC, has launched a pro bono initiative aimed at providing free legal services to vulnerable members of society, including low-income earners, persons living below the poverty line, and persons with disabilities.
Under the initiative, eligible applicants can access free legal assistance for various legal matters by applying through the firm’s website. The pro bono service and the online platform were unveiled as part of activities marking the firm’s second anniversary in Accra.
Speaking at the launch, the Managing Partner of A-List Attorneys Ghana, Jerry John Kofi Asiedu, said the initiative was driven by the firm’s commitment to making justice accessible to all.
“This is our way of giving back to society. We already take on pro bono clients, but we have decided to formalise it and expand our reach,” he said.
Mr Asiedu stressed that justice should not be the preserve of the rich and powerful, noting that access to legal representation remains a major challenge for many vulnerable people.
“Although we are a fairly new firm, we have represented many clients on a pro bono basis and we intend to do more. Pro bono work is an essential part of our DNA because of our humble beginnings and our understanding of the difficulties people face in accessing legal services,” he added.
He also called on fellow lawyers and private legal practitioners to take on more pro bono cases and support the work of the Legal Aid Commission.
According to him, while the Legal Aid Commission has a constitutional mandate to provide legal services to the poor and vulnerable, it cannot meet the growing demand alone.
“The Legal Aid Commission cannot serve the millions of people who need legal assistance but cannot afford it. As lawyers, we must complement its efforts and ensure that poverty does not deny anyone effective legal representation,” he said.
Providing some background on the firm, Mr Asiedu noted that A-List Attorneys Ghana was established in 2023 with a strong belief that the law must be used to promote justice, fairness, and equality.
“Justice is at the heart of the law. We established this firm to fight for anyone seeking justice, including the downtrodden. Without fairness and justice, we are doomed as a society,” he stated.
