Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended his condolences to the families of Ghanaian traders killed in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.

The attack reportedly targeted traders travelling through the area and has heightened concerns about cross-border security along established trade routes between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Dr. Bawumia, together with the NPP and his wife, Samira Bawumia, expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

In a post on X, on Monday, February 16, Bawumia wrote, “The NPP, Samira, and I express our condolences to the families of the bereaved and our best wishes to the injured.”

He stressed that Ghanaian traders must not be left vulnerable as they go about their lawful activities and urged the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with neighbouring countries to ensure the safety of Ghanaians abroad.

“Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade. I urge the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with all our neighbours to ensure Ghanaians are protected wherever they find themselves,” he said.

The NPP flagbearer further called for the strengthening of Ghana’s existing framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism to address emerging security threats.

The incident has renewed attention on security along key trade corridors between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
