Ghana’s tuna industry has earned the internationally recognised Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for its Atlantic skipjack and yellowfin fisheries, marking a major milestone for the country’s fisheries sector.
Speaking at the official announcement on Tuesday, March 3, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, said the certification confirms that Ghana’s tuna fleets meet global standards for sustainable fishing, effective stock management, and strong governance systems.
According to her, the milestone was made possible through improved monitoring, enhanced data collection, and adherence to responsible fishing practices. She noted that the recognition strengthens Ghana’s position in the highly competitive global seafood market.
“This milestone is significant, not only for the tuna industry but for Ghana’s broader blue economy agenda. In today’s global marketplace, sustainability, traceability, and transparency are central to maintaining competitiveness and securing access to premium markets. MSC certification enhances the reputation of Ghanaian tuna products,” She said
