Ghana issues travel advisory after deadly Mali attacks

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory to Ghanaians following deadly terrorist attacks in Mali that have heightened security concerns across the Sahel region.

Multiple news outlets reported that Mali’s defence minister, Sadio Camara, was killed during a coordinated series of attacks carried out across the country by jihadist militants and separatist groups.

State TV confirmed the death several hours later, saying he died of wounds received while engaging with the attackers. Reports say the head of the military junta, Gen Assimi Goita, was moved to a safe location after his home was targeted.

Further north Russian mercenaries hired by Mali’s military agreed to withdraw from Kidal after two days of clashes, the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) group said.

In a statement released on Monday, the Government of Ghana expressed deep concern over coordinated attacks carried out on April 25 on several military installations in Mali, including in the capital, Bamako.

The attacks reportedly resulted in multiple casualties, including senior military figures, as well as injuries to both soldiers and civilians.

Ghana extended its condolences to the government and people of Mali, describing the incident as a tragic development and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

“Violent extremism must have no place in our world, and we must step up collective efforts to end this horror,” the statement said.

As part of immediate precautionary measures, the Ministry advised Ghanaians living in or travelling to Mali to exercise extreme caution and limit all non-essential movements.

Citizens were also urged to maintain regular contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Bamako for updates and assistance.

In addition, Ghanaian traders and drivers who ply the Mali route have been directed to suspend movement until further notice as authorities work to stabilise the situation.

The government indicated that it is collaborating closely with Malian authorities and will provide updates to facilitate the safe resumption of normal activities when conditions improve.
