Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA marks 2nd anniversary with life-changing donations

In a demonstration of compassion and community service, the Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA commemorated its 2nd anniversary and Mother’s Day celebrations with a healthcare support project benefiting mothers and newborns at the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa and the Achimota Hospital.

The humanitarian initiative focused on supporting maternal and newborn healthcare while bringing relief to struggling mothers and healthcare facilities.

As part of the project, the Club, in collaboration with the Wheelchair Foundation and Chair The Hope donated wheelchairs to improve mobility support for patients within the hospitals.

In addition, newborn care packages containing essential baby items were presented by the Club to new mothers to support them during the critical post-delivery period.

In one of the most touching aspects of the project, the Club also settled the outstanding medical bills of several newborn mothers, many of whom were unable to afford the cost of healthcare after delivery. The intervention brought immense relief and joy to the beneficiaries, some of whom faced delays in discharge due to unpaid medical expenses.

Speaking during the presentation, the President of the Club, Rotarian Mother Teresa Brew, noted that the project formed part of Rotary’s commitment to maternal and child health, one of Rotary International’s key areas of focus.

She explained that the initiative was intentionally aligned with Mother’s Day celebrations to honour the sacrifices, strength, and resilience of mothers.

She further emphasised that healthcare support remains a critical need in many communities and that service organisations must continue to complement government efforts by responding to the immediate needs of vulnerable groups.

Officials of both the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital and Achimota Hospital expressed profound gratitude to the Club for the timely intervention. According to hospital authorities, the donations and financial support would significantly ease the burden on both patients and the healthcare facilities.

Beneficiary mothers, many visibly emotional, also thanked the Club for the kindness shown to them and their babies. For several of them, the support came at a moment of great financial and emotional difficulty.

The project reflects the growing impact of the Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA since its chartering two years ago. The alumni-based Rotary club, made up largely of old students from PRESEC and Aburi Girls’ Secondary School, has undertaken various service initiatives focused on health, education, youth empowerment, and the environment.

As the Club celebrates its second anniversary, members reaffirmed their commitment to living out Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” by continuing to undertake impactful projects that improve lives and strengthen communities.

The anniversary project not only celebrated the milestone of the Club but also served as a reminder that acts of kindness, compassion, and service can restore dignity and hope to those in need.

Beyond the hospitals, the Club extended its impact to the Oti Region, where one of the wheelchairs was donated to a resilient single mother in Worawora who has been unable to walk since childhood. Despite her condition, she works tirelessly as a groundnut farmer to care for herself and her son.

The donation of the wheelchair is expected to significantly improve her mobility, independence, and daily livelihood activities. Her story deeply moved members of the Club and underscored the importance of supporting vulnerable persons with dignity and compassion.
