The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed the deaths of four people following torrential rainfall that hit parts of Accra on Monday, June 29.
Speaking on Channel One News, Assistant Divisional Officer of the GNFS, Alex King Nartey, said the fatalities were recorded in separate flooding incidents across the capital.
According to him, one of the victims is a man believed to be in his 60s who died at Alajo. He noted that emergency responders were still awaiting police assistance to retrieve the body for preservation.
He further confirmed three additional deaths in other parts of Accra. These include a woman and her child who died at Achimota Alogboshie, as well as another man who also lost his life at Achimota Abofu.
“These are the four confirmed deaths I can confirm,” Mr. Nartey said, adding that while there were indications of possible additional fatalities, authorities were still verifying reports before making further confirmation.
The GNFS said it is continuing assessments in affected communities as emergency response operations continue following the heavy downpour.
Hours of heavy rainfall that began around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday and continued into Monday morning triggered widespread flooding across parts of Accra and the Greater Accra Region, leaving major roads impassable, inundating homes, trapping residents, and disrupting economic and social activities.
Among the hardest-hit routes was the Kasoa–SCC–Mallam highway, where floodwaters submerged sections of the road, forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles while others were stranded for hours in long traffic queues.
Several feeder roads linking surrounding communities also became inaccessible as rising water levels cut off movement.
