The Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee and MP for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the Governing Council of Bolgatanga Technical University and appoint a new one.

His call follows the suspension of the university’s Vice-Chancellor by the Governing Council Chairman over alleged corruption, as well as the suspension of some lecturers and the university’s procurement officer.

The Akatsi North MP says the actions taken by the Governing Council are inconsistent with the statutes governing the administration of technical universities.

Speaking to journalists, he also urged the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to reinstate the suspended Vice-Chancellor.

“The Council Chair has taken over the day to day administration of the university. My position is that, the President of the Republic should dissolve the Governing Council and appoint a new Council. GTEC must also restore the Vice Chancellor back to office.

“GTEC should also take up the matter and report to the corruption-related organisations for investigation and report so that the truth of the matter is established. For now we think there are special interests in that university and academic freedom is suffering. There is the need for drastic measures to be undertaken,” he said
