The Minority Women’s Caucus in Parliament has condemned the reported assault on former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo during a family-related event in Kwabenya, describing the incident as a disturbing reminder of the violence many women continue to face and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, the caucus expressed shock and concern over the incident, saying violence against women cannot be justified under any circumstances.
“We unequivocally condemn every form of violence against women, irrespective of the circumstances under which it occurs. No woman should be subjected to intimidation, assault or the use of firearms in the course of exercising her lawful rights or participating in family or public affairs,” the statement said.
The caucus said it stood in solidarity with Ms Safo and wished her a full and speedy recovery from the injuries she reportedly sustained.
It also commended the Ghana Police Service for what it described as its swift initial response and urged investigators to pursue the case “thoroughly, professionally and without fear or favour.”
According to the caucus, anyone found culpable should face the full rigours of the law, stressing that “justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
The lawmakers said the incident underscored the need for stronger protection for women against violence, intimidation and abuse, noting that such acts have no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
The Minority Women’s Caucus pledged to continue advocating for the safety, dignity and protection of women across the country and called on Ghanaians to reject violence in all its forms while promoting the peaceful resolution of disputes.
