A head porter has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Torkor Circuit Court in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region for robbery.
The convict, identified as Akpalu Prince, pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea by the court, presided over by Joseph Ofosu Behome.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector McRae Pomevor told the court that the complainant is an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service stationed at Aflao and resides at Second Low-Cost in the municipality. The convict, meanwhile, lived at Garapan, a suburb of Aflao.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on July 13, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. at Ave Maria Junction in Aflao.
The court heard that the complainant was standing by the roadside waiting to board a motorbike while holding her iPhone 12, valued at GH¢3,600, when the convict suddenly attacked and snatched the device.
The prosecution said the complainant grabbed the convict’s shirt in an attempt to stop him from fleeing, but he pushed her against a wall and escaped.
She subsequently raised an alarm, prompting members of the public to pursue the suspect. He was eventually arrested a short distance from the scene.
A search conducted on the convict led to the recovery of the stolen iPhone, which the complainant identified as her property.
The suspect was handed over to the police together with the retrieved phone, after which a formal complaint was lodged.
Chief Inspector Pomevor said the convict admitted to the offence in his caution statement during police interrogation.
Following investigations, he was charged with robbery and arraigned before the court.
The court subsequently sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
