ASA Savings and Loans through it Accra West Division has kickstarted this year’s breast cancer awareness at Odorkor, a surburb of Accra.

There were about 101 women who got screened with some men in attendance who came to support the launch.

EDUCATION

The medical team from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital was led by Dr Edwin Essel, who facilitated the education on early detection of the ailment.

The participants were educated on how to self-examine, and consult the appropriate quarters to help reduce the impact of the cancer.

Breast screening helps people diagnosed with breast cancer to understand their options, make informed decisions, and connect to people who have been where they are, he added.

ROLE

Corporate bodies play a critical role in driving awareness.

The Human Resource Manager of ASA, Ms Eunice Boadu, who gave a brief speech at the launch, tasked all to join hands to raise more than awareness as we take action, support one another, and help women now. She noted that this year’s theme, “Managing together to close the care gap”, meant no individual could manage the complex nature of breast cancer alone.

CSR Manager, Richard Nartey said by educating ourselves and others, barriers of fear and ignorance is broken down and helps individuals to make informed decisions on their health. Beyond the numbers of breast cancer, we must acknowledge the countless individuals and families who are affected by this disease, he added.

It is well to note that ASA will be sponsoring the screening of breast throughout its operational areas of the country and this forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, the Divisional Manager, Mr Serazus Sieathin said.

Ms Regina Mireku, the Acting Deputy Chief Nursing Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after the screening, said out of the 101 women screened, 12 were referred further to do mammogram for early detection of any abnormalities for prompt management.
