'Rawlings waged a revolution but didn't kill anyone'

Former Keta Member of Parliament (MP) Dan Abodakpi has defended the legacy of former President Jerry John Rawlings, emphasising that Rawlings did not kill anyone during his revolutionary period.

Abodakpi’s remarks came in response to derogatory comments made in Parliament about D. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the daughter of the late president and current MP for Klottey Korle.

“Jerry Rawlings waged a revolution but he didn’t kill anybody, he didn’t murder anybody. Yes, revolutions can have collateral damages but Rawlings did not directly or indirectly kill anybody,” Abodakpi asserted in Accra on Tuesday when the Greater Accra NDC Volta Diaspora Caucus petitioned Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to probe the incident and hold the responsible MP accountable.

Abodakpi, a foundation member of Ghana’s fourth republic, reflected on the early days of the fourth parliament, highlighting the sense of duty and patriotism that guided their work.

“I, by the grace of God, was a foundation member of the fourth republic, of this fourth parliament, and we walked through the hallowed walls of this parliament and laid a solid foundation upon which our democracy is being built today. We worked in this honourable [house] with a sense of responsibility, sense of duty, diligence, and patriotism.

“Never in the course of the 16 odd years that I was MP for Keta in this hallowed chamber did we hear some of the comments that have been attributed to some honourable members of this house,” he stated.
