Politician and businessman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has denied a series of allegations made against him in connection with an ongoing criminal case involving a Singaporean national, Toh You Kang.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Mr. Moore’s legal counsel described the claims — including extortion, political coercion, and human rights violations — as “unfounded” and “malicious,” and called on the public to respect the rule of law.
The case, which centres on allegations of fraud involving more than $5.8 million, is currently under review by the Attorney General’s Department after the matter was investigated by the Ghana Police Service and the Economic and Commercial Crime Office.
Fraud Complaint and Legal Proceedings
According to the statement, Mr. Moore lodged a formal complaint with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command in May 2025, accusing Mr. Toh of defrauding him and his business partners by false pretence.
Following preliminary investigations, Mr. Toh was remanded in custody, where he has remained for the past five weeks. A second complaint of stealing was later filed with the Economic and Commercial Crime Office, and both dockets were consolidated and referred for legal advice.
“This process was carried out in accordance with the laws of Ghana, devoid of interference or political influence,” the statement read.
Rebuttal of Key Allegations
Responding to public commentary, particularly criticisms from legal academic Prof. Kwaku Azar, Mr. Moore denied receiving $800,000 from Mr. Toh in exchange for Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) contracts, calling the claims “patently false.”
He also rejected assertions that he solicited political contributions for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign in 2024, stating that all fundraising was done transparently by a designated committee.
Additionally, the statement insisted that Mr. Toh was lawfully arrested and has had access to legal counsel, family communication, and humane treatment throughout his detention.
Allegations that Mr. Moore circulated semi-nude images of Mr. Toh in an attempt to extort his family were described as “entirely false, malicious, and defamatory.”
Political and Legal Integrity
The legal team praised the professionalism of Ghana’s law enforcement agencies and reaffirmed Mr. Moore’s faith in the legal process, urging against politicising what they described as a “commercial and criminal dispute.”
“As a senior political figure and respected entrepreneur, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has demonstrated unwavering trust in Ghana’s legal institutions,” the statement added.
Mr. Moore also reaffirmed his support for Ghana’s investment climate, while warning against attempts by foreign actors to exploit diplomatic and commercial goodwill.
Call for Calm
The statement ended with a call for calm and a plea to allow the Attorney General’s Department to conclude its work without interference.
“No individual is above the law, nor should anyone be vilified without evidence,” said Gideon Tettey Tetteh, legal counsel to Mr. Moore.
“We urge the public and the media to uphold the sanctity of due process, resist sensationalism, and allow justice to take its natural course.”
