Don’t politicise Ridge Hospital assault – Health Committee Chair warns Minority

The Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee and Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has condemned attempts to politicise the recent assault on healthcare workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.

His comments follow claims by the Minority in Parliament that the perpetrators of the attack, captured in a viral video, were aligned with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The video showed relatives of an accident victim clashing with emergency staff over alleged delays in treatment. The confrontation escalated into the alleged assault of a nurse by social media activist Ralph St. William, prompting hospital authorities to call in the police.

In the aftermath, the Minister of Health visited the facility, condemned the incident, and pledged tighter security measures.

However, the Minister drew public criticism when he was later seen shaking hands with the alleged perpetrator.

While acknowledging the Minority’s condemnation of the attack, Dr. Nawaane said linking the suspects to the NDC was “very unfortunate.”

“They are saying that the perpetrators are individuals aligned with or have a sympathetic relation with the NDC. I thought that given what happened, we would unite as a nation and condemn it. Yet, they are trying to say that these are people aligned with the NDC. That is very unfortunate,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday, August 20, 2026.

He stressed that the government had already taken decisive action, pointing out that the Minister himself condemned the act and commissioned a probe into the incident.

“Inasmuch as it is an unfortunate situation, I want to call on the medical staff that the Health Committee of Parliament is with them in this trying moment. We are going to ensure that the case is investigated, and we are also going to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” Dr. Nawaane assured.
