The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has withdrawn the accreditation of three postgraduate programmes at the Institute of Development & Technology Management (IDTM) in Cape Coast, citing violations in the mode of delivery.
In a letter signed by the Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, on Wednesday, September 17, the Commission said the institution was running its PhD, MPhil, and MA programmes in Development Studies as weekend programmes, despite accreditation being granted only for regular (weekday) delivery.
GTEC stressed that accredited programmes cannot be repackaged and delivered in different formats — such as weekend or sandwich — without prior approval.
As a result, the accreditation for the affected programmes has been revoked and the Commission has directed IDTM to:
Withdraw all admission letters issued under the unauthorised weekend version of the programme;
Cease all fresh admissions into the PhD in Development Studies;
Submit documentary evidence of compliance with these directives.
Provide a comprehensive teach-out plan for all currently enrolled students to ensure their studies are not disrupted.
The institution has until October 17, 2025, to submit the teach-out plan, which will be overseen by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Both universities have also been directed to terminate any collaborative admissions arrangements with IDTM with immediate effect.
GTEC emphasised that non-compliance with the directives will attract the necessary regulatory sanctions.
The Commission, however, indicated that IDTM may reapply for fresh accreditation should it wish to run the programmes in a weekend format.
