Nana B: Abronye’s detention a deliberate weaponisation of state institutions

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised the continued detention of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing it as a deliberate weaponisation of state institutions.

Abronye was remanded into police custody for one week by an Accra Circuit Court to allow prosecutors more time to conduct investigations. He was first arrested on Monday, September 8, by the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe on Friday, September 12, Nana Boakye warned that the NPP would resist any attempt by state institutions to intimidate its members.

He further questioned why no action had been taken against Alhaji Sofo Azorka, who was captured on video threatening to kill the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, himself, and the Deputy Minority Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

Nana Boakye argued that the selective application of the law undermines justice and breeds political tension.

“Sofo Azorka is walking freely. When they arrested Abronye, a notice of his arrest went viral, and he was handcuffed. Have you seen any images of Sofo Azorka? No, so, clearly, there’s a deliberate weaponisation of these state institutions to harass the opposition party. And we’re going to stand against this,” he said.

Abronye’s arrest was based on what the police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.” He has remained in custody since then.

While specific details surrounding the charges have not been publicly disclosed, the case has drawn significant national attention due to Abronye’s high-profile political position and outspoken commentary.

The court ruled on Friday that he is to reappear on September 19, 2025, as investigations continue.
