Health authorities in the Ashanti Region are raising serious concerns over the growing number of breast cancer cases diagnosed at late stages in Ghana.
According to the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, more than 80% of breast cancer diagnoses in the country occur at advanced stages — significantly reducing patients’ chances of survival.
In the Ashanti Region alone, a total of 5,024 new breast cancer cases were recorded in 2022, with 2,369 deaths attributed to late-stage diagnosis.
Officials warn that treatment options are severely limited once the disease progresses, and have thus stressed the urgent need for increased public awareness to promote early detection.
Speaking at the launch of the Pink October Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in Kumasi on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, urged the public to make regular medical checkups a priority in order to facilitate early diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes.
He also appealed to the media to play an active role in spreading awareness about breast cancer, stressing that timely detection can save lives.
“Over 80% of cases in Ghana are diagnosed at the advanced stages, which are stages three and four. Contrary to the WHO’s global breast cancer initiative early detection target of 60%. In the Ashanti Region alone and across parts of the country, too many women are diagnosed late, when treatment options are often too late for the survival of the patient.
“The reality is that breast cancer can be treated and our loved ones can be saved if detected early. Early diagnosis, early treatment are our strongest bet, which is why this engagement with the media is so crucial to our awareness. You, our partners in the media, have the power to reach millions with life-saving information.
“Your voice can dispel myth, challenge the stigma, and encourage women and men to seek help early. Irrespective of the cause of breast cancer, if it is diagnosed early can be effectively managed,” he said.
