The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU)-Ghana says Prudential Bank Ghana Limited has suspended its earlier decision to grant selective salary increases to about 55 employees following a sit-down protest at the bank’s head office.
The protest, which drew participation from staff from several branches, was triggered by what workers described as unfair treatment and discrimination in the implementation of salary adjustments.
After several hours of a closed-door meeting with management, the General Secretary of the ICU, Morgan Ayawine, announced that the bank had agreed to halt the exercise while further discussions continue on broader salary concerns.
“Management has graciously agreed to suspend the process,” Ayawine told the aggrieved workers after the meeting. “Although some 55 staff have already received the increases, we’ve proposed solutions to address that. Our demand is that the bank take steps to reverse the discriminatory pay adjustments.”
He questioned the rationale behind the selective pay policy, adding, “It is not good to discriminate among ourselves. What do you even mean by critical staff?”
Mr. Ayawine emphasised that while the selective increment has been halted, the union will push for the full implementation of the 15 percent general salary increase that was agreed upon with management at the beginning of 2025.
“The 15 percent is a bigger issue,” he stressed. “We must establish a well-structured standing negotiation committee with management to address all outstanding matters.”
The ICU says it remains committed to ensuring fairness, transparency, and industrial harmony within the banking sector.
