The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has confirmed his readiness to cooperate fully with police investigations into the recent attack on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.
The MP has indicated that he will report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in compliance with the police invitation.
This follows a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, November 3, announcing that the legislator had been invited to assist with ongoing inquiries into the disturbance.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also directed the CID to take over the case. The directive comes after a violent incident on Saturday, November 1, during which the NAIMOS Director and his team were reportedly attacked by a mob after intercepting illegal miners operating near Bronikrom.
In a letter issued through his legal representatives, Hon. Addo reaffirmed his “unwavering commitment to the rule of law, public order, and the peace and security of his constituents and the nation at large.”
The letter further stated that the MP “categorically denies any act or omission amounting to misconduct or obstruction of police duties,” adding that his conduct during the incident was aimed at “calming tensions and preventing a possible breakdown of public order.”
The legal team also requested that “all further communications in respect of this matter be directed to our office.”
According to preliminary police investigations, the NAIMOS team had arrested several suspects and retrieved exhibits, including a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, two pistol magazines, an unregistered Range Rover, an unregistered Toyota RAV4, and several mobile phones.
In its earlier statement, the police noted that while the NAIMOS team was preparing to hand over the suspects to the Hwidiem Police Station, the Asutifi North MP reportedly arrived at the scene with a group and demanded their release — an allegation the legislator has strongly denied.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure due process is followed.
