Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Health, has directed the immediate enforcement of strict day-and-night security measures at all health facilities nationwide following the alleged theft of a newborn at the Mamprobi Polyclinic.
A 33-year-old woman, Latifa Salifu, was arrested on Wednesday, February 18, in connection with the alleged theft, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, February 17, after the child’s mother delivered via cesarean section. The incident caused panic among staff and patients.
Police confirmed that the baby has been safely recovered. According to authorities, the suspect, reportedly dressed as a nurse, was captured on the facility’s CCTV carrying the baby and leaving with what appeared to be a sack. Salifu is expected to be arraigned in court on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
In a press statement, Akandoh directed the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service to enforce enhanced security protocols and for health facility administrators to review and strengthen internal security measures without delay.
He also reiterated the government’s directive that all health facilities must install and maintain functional CCTV surveillance systems.
“In light of the incident, the Hon. Minister for Health has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service to ensure the immediate enforcement of strict day and night security measures across all health facilities nationwide.
“Health facility administrators are required to review and strengthen their internal security protocols without delay. Furthermore, the Minister has reiterated the government’s earlier directive requiring all health facilities across the country to ensure the installation and proper functioning of CCTV surveillance systems,” he stated.
The Minister reassured the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding patients and ensuring accountability within the health sector, while calling for calm as investigations continue.
He commended the swift response and coordination of the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and other stakeholders, including the whistleblower, for their role in addressing the incident.
