The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged the public to heighten vigilance to help prevent fire outbreaks, warning that the Harmattan season has created conditions ripe for preventable fires.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Wednesday, February 4, the Public Relations Officer of the Service, DO II Desmond Ackah, cautioned against the use of naked flames and indiscriminate burning of refuse, particularly in homes, mechanic shops, and markets where waste management is poor.
He explained that the dry and windy Harmattan conditions make both natural and man-made materials highly flammable, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.
He, therefore, urged the public to take early action by reporting potential fire hazards before they escalate into major incidents.
“If we suspect that any activity from a neighbour or anybody around us could lead to a fire situation, or if it is a fire hazard, we should not sit aloof.
“We must make a case and quickly report to the appropriate authorities for the necessary remedy to be put in place to deal with fires around this time of the year,” he said.
