The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has assured the public that the Minority in Parliament will not politicise the recent armed attack on fishermen at Senya Breku in the Central Region.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, February 26, saw armed hijackers open fire on local fishermen before making away with outboard motors and generator sets.
The brazen nature of the attack has raised fresh concerns about security along Ghana’s coastal communities and territorial waters.
Speaking on Eyewitness on Citi FM, Rev. Fordjour described the attack as deeply unfortunate and emphasised the need for a measured and responsible response from political actors.
“We on the Minority will resist every attempt to politicise this incident. It is an unfortunate security situation but we will be quick to indicate that we need to put in place some imperative measures to ensure that our waters are safe,” he stated.
His comments come amid heightened public anxiety over maritime security, particularly following reports of violent activities targeting fishermen and traders in recent weeks.
While reiterating that the Minority would not exploit the situation for partisan advantage, the Assin South legislator raised concerns about what he described as security lapses linked to the absence of a substantive Defence Minister.
“The killing of eight tomato traders in Burkina Faso and today’s incident begs the call for the appointment of a substantive defence Minister. Many people did not appreciate when I started making the calls for the appointment of a substantive minister.”
