Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong and Salaga South, MP Ibrahimah Mohammed Zuwera, have jointly introduced a Private Members’ Bill seeking to amend Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution to set a maximum age limit for candidates aspiring to contest parliamentary seats.
The proposed legislation recommends a maximum age of 65, aiming to prevent individuals above this threshold from standing for election in any constituency.
In a draft submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, they highlighted that while the Constitution currently sets 21 as the minimum age to qualify for Parliament, it does not stipulate a maximum age limit.
According to them, evolving governance demands, democratic shifts, and the need for legislative efficiency justify the review
“Parliamentary duties require sustained physical stamina, cognitive agility, and responsiveness to complex policy challenges, including digital transformation, climate change, and global economic integration,” the draft states
As part of their justification, they explained that a reasonable maximum age threshold would promote sustained performance in legislative duties, reduce risks associated with age-related incapacity, and encourage structured leadership transition within Parliament
The MPs also noted that the proposal aligns with international best practices in institutional capacity building.
