The Ghana Immigration Service in the Volta Region has intercepted 20 foreign nationals who entered the country without valid documentation, reportedly using Ghana as a transit route to the Ivory Coast.
The group, made up of individuals from Niger, Nigeria, and Togo, claimed they were en route to the Ivory Coast but insisted their destination was not Ghana. However, immigration authorities strongly suspect otherwise.
Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Peter Yaw Nkrumah, told Citi News the individuals will be deported to their port of entry in accordance with immigration regulations.
“The people you see over here are travellers, some are from Northern Nigeria, some are from Burkina Faso, and some are from Niger. Their accounts are conflicting.
“Some say they are going to Madina, some too say they are going to Côte d’Ivoire. So right now we don’t know where they are going. If they are going to Abidjan, we believe that the best way from Aflao is through Sogakope but these people were intercepted at Asikuma.
“And since the stories are not the same, we believe that they are not telling us the right stories. They are not even having any good documents to come and show us that they are travelling from here to here.
“So the best thing for them in this circumstance is to return them to the entry point where they claim they have crossed from.”
