The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to reintroduce Town Councils as part of efforts to strengthen sanitation enforcement across the capital.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring residents and business owners maintain proper cleanliness in their communities, with stricter enforcement of sanitation by-laws expected to take effect from Monday.

Speaking during the National Sanitation Day exercise in Accra on Saturday, May 2, the Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey noted that while many shop owners have complied with the directives and participated in the clean-up, sustained commitment is necessary to keep the city clean.

“This exercise is encouraging, but sanitation must be continuous and not something we do occasionally,” he stated.

He further warned that individuals who fail to comply with sanitation regulations will face sanctions, including fines, as enforcement intensifies.

Also speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, urged traders and shop owners to strictly adhere to sanitation by-laws.

“Full compliance is key to achieving a cleaner and healthier city, and enforcement will be critical going forward,” he said.

The reintroduction of Town Councils is expected to improve monitoring, enhance community participation and ensure sustained sanitation practices across Accra.
