Relatives of victims of a deadly attack on a passenger bus in Ghana’s North East Region are calling on the government to tighten security along the Walewale stretch following the incident that has left commuters shaken.
Two people were killed and several others injured when armed men ambushed a bus at Nasia, near Walewale, while it was travelling from Kumasi to Zibila. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
Family members say the attack has heightened fear among travellers who depend on the route for movement between northern and southern Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of affected families, the Assembly Member for the Konsoogo Electoral Area, David Atule, urged swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further attacks.
“The security should come in to ensure that those found culpable should be brought to book. It is a very sad incident that we have witnessed,” he said.
He also appealed for increased protection along the corridor, including security escorts for vehicles.
“We are appealing to the security to heighten security on the road, especially in Walewale. We can’t keep losing the lives of our dear ones,” he added.
Atule said the situation has compounded existing travel difficulties for residents in the area.
“Already, moving down south is difficult for us, and now there is the issue of security. So we plead that the government steps in with escorts so that we can have safe travel to the down south,” he said.
While details of the attack remain unclear, some eyewitnesses suspect the assailants may have been armed robbers. The incident has renewed concerns over safety on highways in the northern part of the country, with residents calling for urgent intervention to restore confidence and protect lives.
