Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Aide to the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticised the continued remand of Bono Regional NPP Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, over alleged offensive conduct, warning against what he terms a dangerous legal precedent.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, May 13, Miracles Aboagye argued that while insults may be socially unacceptable, they do not amount to a crime that should attract arrest or detention.

“Our laws are clear. Insult is not a crime under our laws…we all need to speak up and tell this government that, listen, you are setting a very bad precedent,” he said.

According to him, treating offensive remarks as criminal conduct risks undermining free speech and creating uncertainty in the enforcement of public order laws.

”So today you are telling me that you are keeping a fellow citizen in remand for two weeks simply because, in your view, he insulted a judge. Insult can never be allowed to be criminalised in this country. And we are going to resist it,” he stated.

Abronye DC was first arrested on April 13 as part of investigations into alleged offensive conduct, misinformation, and publication of statements considered capable of inciting fear and panic. He was later granted bail while investigations continued.

He was re-arrested on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, and subsequently remanded for two weeks as authorities continue with investigations into the case.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has raised concern over what he describes as a growing pattern of intimidation against opposition members, warning that Ghana’s democracy and free speech are “under siege”.
