Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called for urgent strategic interventions to boost personnel strength and expand infrastructure within the Ghana Police Service to enable it respond effectively to rising security demands across the country.
He said current policing capacity in the Lower Manya Krobo jurisdiction highlights a significant shortfall in the police-to-civilian ratio, underscoring the need for immediate measures to strengthen law enforcement presence in the area.
Speaking during the commissioning of the new Divisional Police Headquarters at Laasi in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Mr Yohuno revealed that the jurisdiction, with a population of 314,859, is currently served by only 260 police officers, translating into a ratio of approximately one officer to 1,200 residents.
He noted that this falls well below the United Nations recommended standard of one officer to 500 people.
Touching on violent crime in the area, the IGP said incidents have remained relatively low due to deliberate policing strategies and strong collaboration with community leaders and residents. However, he warned that the increasingly sophisticated nature of criminal activity demands a shift in policing methods.
“Criminal activities have become increasingly sophisticated and require us to rethink and modernise our equipment as law enforcement,” he stated, stressing the need for advanced tools, infrastructure and operational reforms to enhance policing efficiency.
