The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that a nationwide timetable for transformer replacement and upgrades will be released in the coming weeks as part of efforts to stabilise power supply.

He said 140 new transformers have already been installed, with an additional 300 set to be deployed in the coming weeks to improve electricity reliability across the country.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Koforidua, Mr Jinapor stressed that the government is working to ensure Ghana does not return to the era of persistent power outages, widely known as “dumsor.”

He also commended staff of the Volta River Authority and Ghana Grid Company for their swift response in restoring power after a recent fire at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation.

“Thank you to the staff of VRA and Gridco for the job you’ve done. You deserve commendation. What you’ve achieved is unparalleled, and we have absolute confidence in you,” he said.

Mr Jinapor noted that Ghana is not only meeting its domestic electricity demand but is also exporting power to neighbouring countries including Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo.

He further clarified that the ongoing transformer installations are part of a new procurement drive.

“You have installed over 2,500 transformers. And let me put on record, these are not transformers that we inherited. I’ve heard some misinformation going on,” he added.

According to the minister, the government remains on track to install more than 2,500 new transformers nationwide, describing the current energy situation as stable.

He added that the transformers were procured under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure.
