The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has pledged a transparent investigation into the death of a pregnant woman at a health facility in Kasoa, as public concern grows over the circumstances surrounding the case.

Prof. Akoriyea made the remarks after visiting the family of the late Abigail Opoku, who reportedly died at the Mother and Child Hospital on April 26, 2026, after allegedly being denied a caesarean section due to a lack of beds in the recovery ward.

The Ghana Health Service said the Central Regional Health Directorate has since set up a committee to investigate the incident.

Speaking after the visit on May 1, Prof. Akoriyea stressed that the process would be independent and that its findings would be fully implemented.

“Nobody is going to interfere in the committee’s work. Whatever they come out with is what we are going to implement,” he said.

He also pointed to recurring communication challenges within the health system, suggesting they may be contributing factors in such incidents.

“Most of the time we find out that there is an issue of a communication gap, and that requires that we keep the public abreast every time,” he added.
