The Addiction That is Stealing Your Child’s Focus

Technology has completely changed the way we learn. Today, students can attend classes online, watch tutorials from anywhere, access digital libraries, and even use AI tools to support their learning. A smartphone or laptop is no longer just a gadget; for many learners, it has become a classroom, a library, and a study partner all in one.

But there’s another side to this growing digital world. The same devices designed to help students learn are also becoming one of the biggest sources of distraction. A learner may pick up their gadget to study for a few minutes and suddenly end up scrolling through social media, watching videos, replying to messages, or jumping between apps for hours. Somewhere between online learning and endless notifications, their focus begins to disappear. This is why conversations around screen addiction are becoming more important than ever.

Parents are worried about how much time children spend on devices. Teachers are noticing shorter attention spans in classrooms. Even students themselves admit it’s becoming harder to stay focused in a world built around constant digital stimulation.

At the same time, technology itself is not the problem. In many ways, EdTech has made learning more accessible and inclusive. Students can now learn at their own pace, access online educational resources, and gain opportunities that may not have existed before. For many communities, technology continues to bridge important gaps in education.

So the real questions are:

  1. How do we find balance?
  2. How do we use technology to improve learning without becoming overly dependent on it?
  3. How do we create healthy digital habits for learners while still embracing technology?
  4.  Are we doing enough to teach students how to manage technology responsibly?

These are some of the important conversations we’ll be exploring in this month’s episode of EdTech Mondays: “Screen Addiction: Are Tech Devices Teaching or Trapping Learners?”
