Member of Parliament for Yendi, Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, has backed the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) quarterly tariff adjustment, saying the incremental increases are preferable to large, one-off hikes that place a heavier burden on consumers.

His comments come after the PURC announced an upward review of electricity and water tariffs on Monday, June 22, with the new rates set to take effect from July 1, 2026.

Under the Commission’s third-quarter tariff adjustment, electricity tariffs have been increased by 3.49 per cent across the board, while water tariffs have been raised by 0.85 per cent.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, June 27, Mr. Alhassan said the quarterly review mechanism had been effective in cushioning consumers against steep tariff increases.

“This quarterly adjustment, I don’t think it’s that bad. I think it’s good. If you have these small increments, sometimes it helps more than to have a huge one [increase] at once that hurts people so hard. The quarterly reviews are good,” he said.

He added that the quarterly adjustment mechanism had been managed effectively over the years.

“We have managed this so well all this time,” he stated.
