The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has committed GH¢1.4 million, representing 10% of its 2025 District Assemblies Common Fund allocation, to procure furniture to improve teaching and learning conditions in basic schools across the metropolis.
The intervention comes in response to a long-standing shortage of desks in several schools, a challenge that has affected classroom comfort and learning outcomes.
As part of the rollout, the Assembly has handed over 1,170 dual desks to 29 schools within the metropolis.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the Mayor of Tamale, Abu Takoro, said the initiative forms part of efforts to gradually eliminate the furniture deficit in schools and ensure improved learning environments, assuring that the distribution will continue in phases until all affected schools are adequately supplied.
“This will be in three phases. Phase one is going to be for primary schools only. Then the second phase, the supply has started bringing mono desks, and that is going to be for Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools. And the third phase will be for Kindergartens. These furnitures are part of the share from the 2025 Common Fund that the Metropolitan Assembly received,” he explained.
The Mayor further indicated that the intervention aligns with commitments made during President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign engagements, particularly the promise to improve educational infrastructure and ensure equitable access to learning resources.
However the Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, Nelson Konlanm, disclosed that schools in the metropolis are currently grappling with about a 90% furniture deficit, describing the situation as one that is seriously hampering effective teaching and learning.
According to him, the donation will significantly reduce the gap and improve educational outcomes in the area.
