Ghana and France are seeking to deepen their defence and security cooperation as both countries strengthen efforts to address emerging security threats and promote peace and stability in West Africa.

The renewed commitment followed a meeting between the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, and the French Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Diarra Dimé-Labille, at the Ministry of Defence in Accra.

The discussions focused on the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries and ways to enhance collaboration.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Brogya Genfi said the engagement reaffirmed the strong relationship between Ghana and France.

“I had the honour of receiving at the Ministry of Defence, Ghana, Her Excellency Ambassador Diarra Dimé-Labille. Our discussions focused on the long-standing defence partnership between Ghana and France,” he said.

He noted that the ambassador’s visit reflected the growing cooperation between the two countries.

“Her visit underscores the deep bonds of cooperation and mutual respect that continue to strengthen the relationship between our two countries,” Mr Brogya Genfi stated.

The meeting comes at a time when countries in West Africa are working to strengthen regional security in response to the growing threat of violent extremism in parts of the Sahel.

Although the Ministry of Defence did not disclose specific outcomes of the meeting, the discussions are expected to enhance cooperation in areas such as military training, security coordination, peacekeeping and efforts to respond to evolving security challenges.

France remains one of Ghana’s key defence partners, with both countries maintaining close collaboration on defence training and regional security initiatives.

The latest engagement is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Accra and Paris as they work together to improve security and stability across the subregion.
