The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Kamal-Deen Abdulai, has criticised plans for a new SIM card re-registration exercise, describing it as unnecessary and financially burdensome.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, March 18, Kamal-Deen argued that the proposed exercise would cost the nation millions of cedis without delivering meaningful value.

Instead of a fresh registration, he called for a comprehensive audit of existing SIM registration data, suggesting that any discrepancies identified should be addressed through collaboration with the National Identification Authority.

Kamal-Deen further urged the Communications Ministry to ensure accountability by identifying and sanctioning any individuals responsible for irregularities, while also recovering any funds that may have been misused.

“Sam George should come again. The communication is quite bad and low. This exercise is going to cost this nation millions of cedis again. If we look at it properly, the exercise is just to create loot and share.

“Somebody just wants to create loot and share. This exercise is needless; we do not have to go through it again,” he said.

His comments come after the National Communications Authority disclosed that an audit of SIM card registration data from 2021 to 2023 revealed zero fingerprint matches when cross-checked with the national identity database, raising serious concerns about the credibility of existing records.

The NCA indicated that the findings form part of preparations for a planned SIM re-registration exercise aimed at improving data accuracy and strengthening national security systems.
