Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, the spokesperson for the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu has opposed calls to scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing such suggestions as an “anticlimax” in Ghana’s fight against corruption.
Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday March 31, Sheikh Shaibu warned that abolishing the Office would undermine national efforts to tackle corruption, which he said remains a major challenge.
“Corruption is still a challenge we are dealing with, and the OSP has added another layer to the fight. Any attempt to scrap it is an anticlimax and not something we should encourage,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to support the institution and work collectively to ensure its long-term sustainability, stressing the need to strengthen rather than weaken anti-corruption mechanisms.
Sheikh Shaibu also commended President John Dramani Mahama for intervening in the debate and helping to halt discussions about scrapping the Office, describing the move as critical to preserving the institution.
He further called for measures to guarantee the permanence of the OSP and ensure it is adequately resourced to function effectively.
“We must emphasise the permanence of the Office and also ensure it is well-resourced to fight corruption the way we expect. We should not support any idea to scrap it. For anyone to suggest that the Office should be scrapped is a plot against our fight against corruption,” he said.
Warning of the broader implications, Sheikh Shaibu added that corruption continues to pose serious risks to Ghana’s economy.
“We should all put our shoulders to the wheel and support the permanence of this Office for our own good,” he stated.
