The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has ordered the immediate closure of the popular food joint, Alpha and Omega Chop Bar, located around the Krobo-Odumase area within the Central Business District of Kumasi, citing poor sanitary conditions.
The closure followed an inspection tour by the Mayor, during which a strong, offensive stench was detected from a nearby drainage system that had overflowed onto the main road, posing a serious public health risk to traders and commuters.
Further checks revealed that waste from the food joint had choked the drains, causing the overflow. The situation was exacerbated by the operations of a public toilet facility located directly behind the food joint.
The Mayor has directed that the owners of the toilet facility be summoned to court for operating with fake documentation and without a septic tank, instead discharging waste directly into the drain.
Over 10 other shops, whose activities were contributing to the poor sanitary conditions in the area, have also been summoned to court.
Expressing disappointment over the situation on Wednesday, January 21, Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang-Boadi warned operators of food and sanitation facilities to adhere strictly to environmental and public health regulations or face sanctions.
“We are summoning all of them to court for the law to deal with them,” the Mayor said.
